Currituck Beach Lighthouse
This 163 foot tall light is constructed similar to the Cape Hatteras and Bodie island lights. Adorned with decorative cast iron brackets and ornamental pendants, its operation began in December 1875. Originally the lens was rotated mechanically by heavy driveweights which descended through the middle of the tower. In 1939 the USCG converted the light to automated operations. The beam atop this tower is visible for 19 nautical miles. The Currituck Beach lighthouse is located on Route 12 south of Corolla.
