Oak Island Island
This lighthouse is 169 feet, marks the entrance to the Cape Fear River and was built by the USCG in 1958 of reinforced concrete. This lighthouse, built on a foundation 16 feet thick on top of piles driven over 100 feet into bedrock, gives it the ability to sway up to three feet during a hurricane. It will never have to be painted as paint was mixed in the concrete during construction. The lights are mercury arc bulbs which flash 1.4 million candlepower with a visibility of up to 24 nautical miles. to arrive at Oak Island Lighthouse take State 133 towards Caswell Beach. When it ends continue for several miles to the USCG station near the end of Caswell Beach.
