Ocracoke Lighthouse
The Ocracoke lighthouse is located on Ocracoke Island. Completed in 1823, it has the distinction of being the second oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. With its fixed white light 75 feet above the sea, this light guards the inlet. Before being electrified this lighthouse burned whale oil, lard oil and kerosene for its light source. The lighthouse can be reached by passenger ferry from Hatteras Island or the mainland. These trips take about 45 minutes each way. The lighthouse is situated approximately 1/2 mile from the ferry landing in the village.
